Advantages and Disadvantages of Privacy Screens

December 17, 2020

There are advantages and disadvantages to using a privacy screen, and it is important to understand both if you are deciding whether this product is a good fit for your needs. To begin with, while compatible with most displays, privacy screens are specifically designed for non-touchscreen devices. These screens are not optimized for touchscreen devices, as they can reduce the sensitivity of the display.

In terms of visual privacy, a privacy screen is only effective in concealing the contents of your display when viewed from the side. This means that someone standing directly behind you can still view your display. While a possible downside with respect to privacy, this imperfection is helpful for sharing your display with others when needed. It is also important to note that privacy screens must be used in a bright space, as they do not provide privacy protection in dark or dim lighting.

Beyond its primary purpose, a privacy screen also helps to reduce eye strain and damage. This polarized filter provides glare and UV protection, while also blocking blue light exposure by up to 30%. Though this screen may reduce the clarity of your display and may not be aesthetically appealing to all audiences, the benefits to your eye health are worth these minor inconveniences.

There are several installation methods for privacy screens (e.g., magnetic, double-sided adhesive stickers, tabs), all of which are generally simple. Nonetheless, users should be mindful of the fragility of the plastic and be careful not to damage it during installation. To ensure that the plastic does not develop bubbles, lines, or other distortions on the display, it is important to be precise while attaching it. Once installed, it is possible for the plastic screen to attract fingerprints and dust. You may clean the screen to maintain a clear view. Underneath the plastic, however, your actual device will be protected against potentially permanent scratches and stubborn debris.

Despite the potential limitations, the benefits of privacy screens and the protection they provide far outweigh any disadvantages they may pose. By simply placing this attachment onto your device’s display, you can stop someone from stealing your identity or from exposing confidential company data.
